Profile Larry R. Fleurantin is a University of Florida-trained Haitian-American lawyer. He received his A.A. with the highest honors and distinction from Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC) before he transferred as a junior to Florida International University (FIU) in 1999 to complete his undergraduate studies. Because of his outstanding academic achievements at MDCC, he was awarded an honors scholarship that provided him membership in the prestigious and highly competitive FIU Honors College. During his final undergraduate years, he conducted an ambitious research project involving political decentralization of Haiti's main institutions. Despite academic and work constraints, he managed to complete an internship with former U.S. Senator Robert Graham, (D) Florida, in addition to participating in programs that have helped recent immigrants and communities in the Caribbean. Graduated first of his class and through the University Honors College, Mr. Fleurantin earned his B.A., summa cum laude, from FIU in 2000. His undergraduate studies were supported by two scholarships: an honors scholarship and an American Banker Insurance award. Other undergraduate accomplishments include the following honors, awards and recognitions: - The Political Science 1999-2000 Outstanding Academic Achievement;
- The FIU Department of Political Science 2000 Faculty Year's Book Award;
- MDCC Center for Community Involvement and Civic Literacy, 1999;
- The National Dean's List, 1999 and
- Recognition of Outstanding Merit and Accomplishment Among Who's Who in American Junior Colleges, 1999.
Due to Mr. Fleurantin's superior scholarship and intellectual attainments, he was awarded his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Florida Levin College of Law in 2003. While at UF, he was active in the law school community as well as in state educational issues. He contributed several editorials including one published in The Florida Independent Alligator dealing with the problem of diversity confronting UF College of Law; another published in The Beacon dealing with the challenges facing FIU in establishing its law program and the third one published in The Gainesville Sun challenging Florida Governor Jeb Bush's Talented 20 Plan, the educational component of "One Florida." While in law school, Mr. Fleurantin achieved numerous awards, honors, and recognitions. He received top honors in his Appellate Advocacy course as well as a Book Award for highest grade in International Law, a course taught by eminent international scholar Professor Winston P. Nagan. In addition, Mr. Fleurantin was a teaching assistant for UF Legal Research and Writing Professor Patricia A. Thomson, a research assistant for Professor Kenneth B. Nunn and a member of the Florida Journal of International Law (FJIL) where he served as senior research editor. In March 2004, the South Florida Sun-sentinel featured Mr. Fleurantin in its occasional series: “My Story, A New Life.” In that feature article titled From the Streets to the Suites: Haitian immigrant’s ambition takes him from cabdriver to successful lawyer with his own practice, Mr. Fleurantin shared his story with the South Florida immigrant and non-immigrant communities. Mr. Fleurantin has extensive trial and appellate litigation experience. His portfolio is overflowing with accomplishments some of which are of great importance to his clients. Mr. Fleurantin's works at the appellate level have advanced the cause of justice and contributed to the developement of the law as many of his firm's appeals have resulted in published opinions that address questions of law for which there were no clear answers. Notably, Mr. Fleurantin holds the distinction of having orally argued cases before the Florida Third District Court of Appeal, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. From a scholarly perspective, Mr. Fleurantin is humbled to be recognized for his thought provoking contribution to the field of immigration and appellate law. He first published in the Cardozo Journal of International & Comparative Law (CJICL) Immigration Law: Nowhere to Turn—Illegal Aliens Cannot Use the Freedom of Information Act as a Discovery Tool to Fight Unfair Removal Hearings, 16 Cardozo J. Int’l & Comp. L. 155 (Spring 2008). [SSRN] CJICL of the Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School at Yeshiva University is one of the leading international law journals in the United States. Mr. Fleurantin's most recent law review article is titled: Exhaustion of Administrative Remedies in Immigration Cases: Finding Jurisdiction to Review Unexhausted Claims the Board of Immigration Appeals Considers Sua Sponte on the Merits, 34 American Journal of Trial Advocacy 301 (2010), Cumberland School of Law of Samford University. Mr. Fleurantin is a member of the Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar and has contributed an article to the Florida Bar Journal published in the May 2012 Issue, Vol 86, No. 5 and titled: The Debate Continues on Whether to Remand Family Law Cases with Inadequate Findings. Mr. Fleurantin is a member of the Florida Bar and the following federal bars: U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. Northern District of Florida, U.S. Southern District of Florida and U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Fleurantin is also an active committee member of the International Conference on Information Warfare & Security. Mr. Fleurantin lives in Broward County, Florida with his wife Marie-Michelle R. Fleurantin and daughters Angelique and Simone. He has practiced law in North Miami Beach and concentrates his practice in civil and appellate litigation, with a particular focus on personal injury, car accidents, premises liability, real estate, foreclosure, family law, immigration and naturalization.
